Listen to Dr. Tyson as he speaks on HIV/Aids and Cultural Attitudes; the Possibility of Asteroids colliding with earth in the Indian Ocean – where does the responsibility for action lay; children as natural creators, investigators, scientists; the importance of science literacy……

Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson is the first occupant of the Frederick P. Rose Directorship of the Hayden Planetarium.

Tyson was born and raised in New York City where he was educated in the public schools clear through his graduation from the Bronx High School of Science. Tyson went on to earn his BA in Physics from Harvard and his PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia.

Tyson’s professional research interests are broad, but include star formation, exploding stars, dwarf galaxies, and the structure of our Milky Way. Tyson obtains his data from the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as from telescopes in California, New Mexico, Arizona, and in the Andes Mountains of Chile.

In 2001, Tyson was appointed by President Bush to serve on a 12-member commission that studied the Future of the US Aerospace Industry. The final report was published in 2002 and contained recommendations (for Congress and for the major agencies of the government) that would promote a thriving future of transportation, space exploration, and national security.

In 2004, Tyson was once again appointed by President Bush to serve on a 9-member commission on the Implementation of the United States Space Exploration Policy, dubbed the Moon, Mars, and Beyond commission. This group navigated a path by which the new space vision can become a successful part of the American agenda. And in 2006, the head of NASA appointed Tyson to serve on its prestigious Advisory Council, which will help guide NASA through its perennial need to fit its ambitious vision into its restricted budget.

In addition to dozens of professional publications, Dr. Tyson has written, and continues to write for the public. He was a monthly essayist for Natural History magazine under the title Universe. And among Tyson’s nine books is his memoir The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist; and Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution, co-written with Donald Goldsmith. Origins is the companion book to the PBS-NOVA 4-part mini-series Origins, in which Tyson serves as on-camera host. The program premiered on September 28 and 29, 2004. And beginning in the fall of 2006, Tyson has appeared as the on-camera host of PBS-NOVA’s spinoff program NOVA ScienceNOW, which is an accessible look at the frontier of all the science that shapes the understanding of our place in the universe.

Tyson’s latest two books are the playful and informative Death By Black Hole and Other Cosmic Quandaries, which was a New York Times bestseller, and The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America’s Favorite Planet, chronicling his experience at the center of the controversy over Pluto’s planetary status. The PBS/NOVA documentary “The Pluto Files”, based on the book, will premiere in March 2010.

During the summer of 2009 Tyson joined with co-host Lynn Koplitz, a professional standup comedienne, to bring science to commercial radio with the NSF-funded pilot program StarTalk. Combining celebrity guests with informative yet playful banter, StarTalk’s target audience is all those people who never thought they would, or could, like science.

Tyson is the recipient of twelve honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal. His contributions to the public appreciation of the cosmos have been recognized by the International Astronomical Union in their official naming of asteroid 13123 Tyson. On the lighter side, Tyson was voted Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive by People Magazine in 2000.

Tyson lives in New York City with his wife and two children.

Read more about Dr. Tyson on his website at the Hayden Planetarium

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is the leading body for the assessment of climate change, established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to provide the world with a clear scientific view on the current state of climate change and its potential environmental and socio-economic consequences.

The IPCC is a scientific body. It reviews and assesses the most recent scientific, technical and socio-economic information produced worldwide relevant to the understanding of climate change. It does not conduct any research nor does it monitor climate related data or parameters. Thousands of scientists from all over the world contribute to the work of the IPCC on a voluntary basis. Review is an essential part of the IPCC process, to ensure an objective and complete assessment of current information. Differing viewpoints existing within the scientific community are reflected in the IPCC reports.

The IPCC is an intergovernmental body, and it is open to all member countries of UN and WMO. Governments are involved in the IPCC work as they can participate in the review process and in the IPCC plenary sessions, where main decisions about the IPCC work programm are taken and reports are accepted, adopted and approved. The IPCC Bureau and Chairperson are also elected in the plenary sessions.

Because of its scientific and intergovernmental nature, the IPCC embodies a unique opportunity to provide rigorous and balanced scientific information to decision makers. By endorsing the IPCC reports, governments acknowledge the authority of their scientific content. The work of the organization is therefore policy-relevant and yet policy-neutral, never policy-prescriptive.
This varied experience reverberates in the interview and gives the listener an idea of the flexibility of Dr. Padmini as she undertook different tasks, always keeping a focus on the rights of the child.
Back in her home town, Bangalore, India since 1994, she has been working with NGOs based in the city. These include:

The positions she filled ranged from Program/Planning Officer and Representative, to Chief, Middle East and North African section and Senior Adviser and Chief , Urban and Children in Difficult Circumstances section. This varied experience reverberates in the interview and gives the listener an idea of the flexibility of Dr. Padmini as she undertook different tasks, always keeping a focus on the rights of the child. She was one of the technical contributors to the discussions involved in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

Back in her home town, Bangalore, India since 1994, she has been working with NGOs based in the city. These include:
•	Mythri Sarva Seva Samithi, working on children’s and women’s issues, especially with reference to child rights, slum dwellers’ development and street children – one special focus is on training Karnataka State government officials and NGOs in various districts [sponsored by UNICEF Hyderabad];
• The Child Rights Trust, which is involved in all aspects of Child Rights from advocacy and training to research, monitoring and evaluation. We work with the Government of Karnataka, UNICEF Hyderabad and for networks such as CACL-K [Campaign against Child Labour] and IACR [India Alliance for Child Rights] . It actively contributes to the Alternative CRC reports to the U.N. and is part of several national processes related to children;
•	CIVIC, a platform for civic issues, local self-governance and citizen-municipal interface mainly in Bangalore and occasionally in other cities in the state;
•	Suraksha, focussing mainly on STDs and HIV/AIDS as part of Reproductive and Child Health. It aims to promote awareness, and behavioral changes, as well as timely health interventions;
•	The Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement in Mysore district, that runs a tribal development project; and
•	A Community -based organization, the Malleswaram Swabhimana Initiative – mostly on issues of citizens’ participation, official and councilor accountability and civic amenities in my residential ward.

Keep busy she does and it was a pleasure listening to the energy behind the stories in the podcast. As she says “I think it is like running like mad just to stay in the same spot; if not one step forward and two steps backward!” And she still has time to visit her children and grandchildren in the USA with her husband.

Please keep supporting Dr. Padmini in the walk to help relieve the trauma that still plagues children affected by the 2009 November floods in North Karnataka. She participated in the Senior Citizens’ Run, though, as she said, “I will walk and not run [allowed]“.

Fouad Kronfol took early retirement from UNICEF in 1995, having served in the Organization from March 1959. His career started in Beirut, Lebanon where, as one of the earliest National Officers he learned programming skills dealing with activities supported by UNICEF in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Saudi Arabia.

His international experience began in 1970 with an assignment to Cairo, Egypt, where he was responsible for the Sudan and Libya.As the activites he developed in Sudan grew in size and complexity, UNICEF decided to open an independent office for that country and Fouad was appointed the first UNICEF Representative in Khartoum. In 1976 he was transferred to New York where he was in charge of the MIddle East, North Africa and Europe section, thus giving him a wider perspective on UNICEF activities in these three regions.

From 1980 to the middle of 1983 Fouad was UNICEF Representative directing the post-war programme of reconstruction and rehabilitation in Hanoi, Viet Nam, and revamping it towards long term development.. When UNICEF was looking to strengthen its work in Africa at the time of serious drought and other emergencies affecting more than 20 countries, Fouad was again transferred to New York and given charge of developing an expanded and more vigorous approach to enabling UNICEF programmes to meet the special challenges of the 45 sub-Saharan countries in Africa. Five years later he was asked to direct a special new programme launched in cooperation with WHO to strengthen primary health care in Africa, the” Bamako Initiative”.

A major change in Fouad’s career came in 1989 when he was appointed Director of Personnel in New York HQ, which opened up a new area of direct involvement in overall management issues of UNICEF.Just before retiring he was put in charge of directing a major Management Review of the organization which was mandated by the Executive Board and was carried out by external consultants (Booz-Allen & Hamilton).He concluded his UNICEF career as Special Adviser in the Executive Director’s Office where he carried out specific studies on global and inter-regional issues .

Fouad Kronfol retired in Montreal, Canada , but has continued to do professional consulting work for, among others, WHO in Geneva, IAEA in Vienna,and UNAIDS. He was member of the Board of the UNICEF National Committee for Canada for 3 years, and carried out a special mission for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on child labour issues in the rug making industry in India and Nepal. He served with the Canadian Executive Service Office and advised on a development programme for the Cree Indians in the Bay James area of northern Quebac. In 2002-2003 he carried out a seminal study for the UNICEF Regional Office in the CEE/CIS region with a view to restructuring the whole range of offices and sub-offices in the countries assisted by UNICEF. He has just completed his two-year tenure with the World-Wide Alumni Association of the American University of Beirut (his alma mater) as member of its first global Board of Directors.
In addition to international and development affairs Fouad’s passion is stamp collecting and he has been on the Board of Administration of his local stamp club for three years. He has contributed part of his collection of stamps on UNICEF to the Organization on the occasion of its 60th Anniversary celebrations – See collection here
