Can a water pump help alleviate poverty? Our United Nations Yakker, Martin Fisher, has spent the last fifteen years showing the world that it can. In 1991, Martin Fisher and Nick Moon
founded KickStart, an international NGO that works to promote sustainable economic growth and employment creation in African countries by developing and promoting technologies that can be used by entrepreneurs to establish and run profitable small-scale enterprises – with an overall mission focused on helping millions out of poverty. Already more than 70,000 farmers in Kenya, Mali, Tanzania and Burkina Faso have employed their low-cost water pumps to create their own small businesses that combined generate more than $77 million in new profits and wages each year.
