About Marco Vianelli-Chiodo

I was born in Venice in 1932, Italian national, doctorate in International Law in 1955, two wives, one daughter. Started work in late 1955 with the European Commission and Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, joined the Italian diplomatic service in 1960, worked in Rome, Vienna, Grenoble, Brussels, Caracas, Frankfurt, Barcelona and Colombo (the latter as ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives).

From 1981 to end 1983 I was the head of the program section of the Italian Development Cooperation in Rome. Then had a falling out with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and joined UNICEF in 1984 as director of PFO (Program Funding Office), later Deputy Executive Director for External Relations from 1988 to end February 1993.

Then I was suddenly named Assistant Secretary-General for Public Information at the UN, very much against my wish, but practically drafted by Secretary-General Boutros-Ghali who wanted me (his words) “to ensure that everyone loved the UN liked they loved UNICEF”, and did not understand that this would require working differently. When it turned out that he was not going to allow me to change the way of working, I resigned end 1993 and went to live in London.

Wrote a book on my life (in Italian) in 2000, Sotto Soldato and survived ever since with warm feelings towards my old UNICEF colleagues (including yourself). As I summarized in the presentation of the book, I passed the last years doing nothing, commuting between London, Switzerland and Italy, pretending to paint and playing Scrabble with Angelika.
